October 3, One Year Later
I had only just arrived in Nova Scotia the evening before to begin my new role as CEO of Symphony Nova Scotia, and this remains one of my favourite photos from my first year in the province. When I look at it now, I see joy, laughter, and a remarkable person whose strength and resilience continue to inspire me.
Before the performances, I learned that Jah'Mila had recently been diagnosed with cancer and that these concerts would be her last before stepping away to focus on treatment. It's difficult to imagine carrying that reality onto a stage. Yet what audiences witnessed over those evenings was nothing short of extraordinary. The performances were powerful, moving, joyful, and inspiring. Jah'Mila brought her full self to the music and to the audience. Her artistry filled the hall, but so did her courage.
Toward the end of the concert, she shared her cancer journey with the audience. The response was immediate and overwhelming. The entire hall rose to its feet in a standing ovation. It was one of the most genuine and heartfelt displays of community support I have ever witnessed.
In that moment, we experienced the very best of what live music can do: bring people together in empathy, support, and shared humanity. It was a powerful reminder of the strength we find in one another, the importance of showing up for our community, and the impact those moments of connection can have on our lives.
As the annual BMO Ride for Cancer approaches on October 3, marking my first anniversary with Symphony Nova Scotia, I want to honour that moment and the remarkable strength Jah'Mila showed throughout it. For that reason, I have set a personal fundraising goal of $2,025, inspired by the year 2025 and dedicated to her example.
With every dollar donated to my Ride, you're helping support Nova Scotians at every stage of the cancer journey, from diagnosis to recovery and survivorship. If you're able to contribute, I would be deeply grateful for your support in helping me reach my goal.
And Jah'Mila, if you're reading this: thank you. For the music, for the laughter, and for reminding all of us what courage looks like. Share
