Another year of fundraising -- but will be the last

Through some sort of miracle, last year you -- my friends and family -- came together to get me over the fundraising line in less than a week. I had delayed fundraising as I wasn't sure I could physically manage that distance, but I made it -- 160 kms of cold and headwinds. 

That was nothing compared to those battling cancer. "Suck it up, Sailor", I could hear my dad's voice telling me as I was doing 12 kms an hour - but giving it all I had - on Aspotogan. It was so rewarding to cross the finish line knowing I was able to raise over $1,000 towards finding a cure. All of you kept me going when my body was trying to tell me to give up.

In the vein of "All good things must come to an end", 2026 is the last year for the BMO Ride for Cancer. This ride has meant so much to so many over the years, but I know BMO has other plans to continue the giving. Last year, I started the ride with a woman who was wearing a "I am riding for..." tag that simply said "ME!". (Yep - choked up reading that.) There were others riding for family and friends that were still in the thick of the fight. It's always a moving experience, but somehow, the mood is always light and positive. It's a special day and I look forward to lining up again this year.

My family has not been immune to cancer's reality this year. In April, I lost an uncle to cancer who was so full of life that I couldn't imagine him ever losing that battle. When I saw him only a few weeks prior, his trademark sense of humour was intact and could still light up the room. When I pin on my number on my bike this year, it will be for Uncle Neil.

Nova Scotia has the highest cancer rates in all of Canada. Currently, 1 in 2 will be diagnosed in their lifetime and 1 in 3 patients will not survive.

To help combat these alarming stats, our BMO Ride for Cancer community will equip our QEII experts with the cancer-fighting technology and treatment options they need to support the full spectrum of cancer care at the QEII Health Sciences Centre.  

On Saturday, October 3, 2026, I’m riding alongside a community with one common goal: transforming local cancer care at Atlantic Canada’s largest and most specialized cancer treatment hospital. This means strengthening every stage of the care journey: earlier diagnosis, more targeted treatment, effective support between appointments, and monitoring that can detect cancer recurrence sooner. At its heart, ensuring more patients have the best possible chance of conquering cancer.
