Riding in memory of my younger brother
The last time I did the 100k trail Ride for Cancer, I was doing it in honour of my younger brother Dave, who was courageously battling cancer at the time.
With frequent trips back and forth to Ottawa to see him, my training was not what it should have been and I really wasn't prepared. When I set out that day, I had planned to only do 50k and get picked up at the halfway point. As I rode, I thought "Dave doesn't have the choice to stop what he is going through, so I won't quit either.'
There were times along the way I honestly thought I was going to throw up or pass out but just kept thinking, one pedal and then another.
Dave lost his battle and this year I ride in his memory. We were only 15 months apart and when we were little kids, would often try to pass ourselves off as twins. :) We joked every birthday "When I'm 70, you'll be 69, or when I'm 80, you'll be 79." I don't know why we found that so funny, but we did. He only made it to 47....he would have been 50 in March. Only the good die young they say....certainly true in his case. Also sitting on my shoulders this year will be my father, who lost his battle at the age of 50 just after my 24th birthday, and my beloved Uncle Bear (Barrie) who was Dave's 'cancer buddy' as they battled together, but he passed away just a few months before my brother.
This year, as Honorary Colonel of 406 Squadron, Maritime Operational Training Unit, I am thrilled that I am entering a team 'The RCAF Cyclones' and that several of my amazing Royal Canadian Air Force friends are joining in the fight. I'm looking forward to continuing my training and long rides with some of them. I hope to feel strong and healthy at the end of the 100k and to make Dave proud.
If you have the means and are so inclined, I would really appreciate a donation to help in this awful @#$! fight against cancer. Or, I would also appreciate if you would send love and positive energy to those currently battling cancer, and to their friends and families.
Rest easy, little brudder. I got this one.
