Supporting cancer care in Atlantic Canada. Learn More.

I’m facing the fight against cancer.

What if we could reduce radiation treatments from 25 to five for certain cancers? Condense up to seven weeks of daily radiotherapy treatment sessions to just one week or less? When you support my ride today, we’re one step closer to making these bold aspirations a reality.

On Saturday, October 1, 2022, I’m riding alongside a community with one common goal: to transform local cancer care, by helping fund a world’s first cancer-fighting technology at the QEII Health Sciences Centre.

This year will be extraordinary…our BMO Ride for Cancer community is all in! With your support, we’ll help introduce a first-in-the-world cancer treatment option, called personalized radiotherapy. Pioneered and invented right here in Nova Scotia at the QEII, this technology has the potential to transform the radiation treatment journeys for Atlantic Canadians facing a cancer diagnosis.

World-leading innovation and inventions are exciting. But the real impact is on QEII patients, who will be the first in the world to access one of the most precise and targeted treatment options available; game-changing care that isn’t offered anywhere else in Canada.

Fewer radiation treatments, better cancer outcomes, reduced side effects, more time at home with family, and reduced financial burden on patients and the healthcare system are all benefits we will help make possible.

By supporting my ride, you are joining a community of champions who are funding the fight against cancer today and for future generations.

The QEII is Atlantic Canada’s largest, most specialized cancer centre, with a radiotherapy program that’s already one of the best in North America. With the support of donors like you, we’ll level up – truly elevating that best-in-class care to new heights, all in the name of cancer patients and their families. This world-leading project will be entirely donor-funded through BMO Ride for Cancer and the QEII Foundation. Now more than ever, we need your support to help make personalized radiotherapy a reality. Learn more about this year’s cause and impact here>.

My Updates

Take me instead, why them

Over half my life has been spent thinking why them, why not me, please take the pain away from them, put me in their place.
My sister was one of the fortune people that was diagnosed at the early stage and the medical team moved quickly, and that was something I’ll never forget. It may have been found quickly but her battle was tough, chemo and radiation, lots of trips to the hospital for treatments including an allergic reaction to the chemo. At the time I didn’t know how to show support, being around 17/18 years of age figuring out life I was scared shitless I might lose my only sibling growing up. Sadly I kept my distance, made it to one or two appointments to show support. But honestly I was not handling it well and didn’t know how to handle my emotions, today we are not only siblings but also best friends. Shortly after word was given that she’ll finish treatments after the current round is when our grandmother passed away after multiple battles of her own with the decease throughout our childhood.
Approximately 10 years later those feelings came back when dad called to say a brain tumour was the cause of a couple irregular stuttering in speech episodes my stepmom had. I’ve said it for years and felt it early into their relationship that she is a blessing to our family and someone I respect and love so much. Felt like my heart was pulled from my chest and being stomped on and was terrified we were going to lose her. Luckily she’s been doing well, brain surgery, chemo and radiation but her brain capability will never be the same. But she is with us and is well. I don’t know what I’d do without her especially the past few years. Shortly after and during the time of follow up treatments and oddly around the same time I made a huge career move that has been a key part of my professional success today, dad, mom, my sister and I had a family lunch when they told us dad was diagnosed with cancer. He knew for a while and waited until I was settled into my new workplace, because over the 4 year battle he was worried about us, he was not afraid to meet his maker but did not want to leave us. He went through two different surgeries, the second had multiple procedures done at the same time. Many rounds of chemo, radiation and trips to the hospital, his battle went on for approximately 4 years, and did he ever put up a fight and gave it his all, right up until his final breath, a night I’ll never forget and happy the three of us was there to comfort him along with the amazing and compassionate staff at Dartmouth General. During his battle his twin brother was also fighting cancer and passed shortly after dad did. Again during this all it was tearing me up but the key learning and want has got us through it is something that dad always referred to is “stronger in numbers”, and we had high numbers of support, prayers, thoughts and came together as a family and close friends that were there.
It still haunts me and moments of I wish it was me and not them, but I also have moments of it’s only a matter of time I’ll be fighting my own battle. To add to it Cancer also took my grandfather when I was 2 years old.
Can’t go without mentioning I’ve also had cousins, uncles, aunts, close friends my age that have fought a battle of their own with different outcomes.

That being said, please support with a donation if you can. It would mean a lot and I want to leverage my good health by participating and contributing to this fundraiser that will help bring awareness and raise as much money as we can for this new innovative form or treatment that will help future victims of cancer.

Sadly we all have similar stories on how it has impacted us. Let’s do what we can when we can!

Aron
