2024 BMO Cancer Ride

Spring has arrived, and for the second time I have signed up for the BMO Cancer Ride, which will take place in September. This year my Daughter, Annette, will again join me along with my grandson, William.  It is our goal once again to complete 50 KM which will be Halifax to Tantallon and returning to Halifax.

This year the funds raised by the participants will go towards introducing a liquid BiopsyTechnology at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. With a simple blood test that can happen anywhere in the Province, QEII experts will use this revolutionary Technology to uncover whether patients are cancer free after surgery, if there cancer has returned and if so, how best to treat it.

Last year when I announced my decision to enter the BMO Ride,  the first persons to sponsor me was my good friend, John Pickford, and his wife, Heather Armstrong. Shortly after completing my ride, John called me and advised that he had just been diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer stage four. This is one of  the really bad cancers and the Doctors prognosis was four to six months. Due to first rate medical treatment along with John’s fighting spirit, the  six months have come and gone and John is fighting on.

In view of this,  it is my intention to dedicate my ride to John.

2024 BMO Ride for Cancer - Finale

Well, the 2024 BMO Ride for Cancer with over 1000 riders participated, with a record $2.5 million raised has concluded. Team Goode to Go raised just over $7000.00, which I think is absolutely outstanding!

As some of you know our friend John Pickford, who was fighting pancreatic cancer passed away on September 12, eleven months after being diagnosed.  Shortly after his passing I contacted his wife Heather and asked her to send me a picture of John so I could have it with me during my ride.  Wouldn't you know it was John attired in his finest biking outfit alongside his recently purchased E bike which I had talked him into buying.

After we finished our 50 km ride I had a short rest and took on some fluids. I then mounted my bike and John and I headed back to Tantallon which is an additional 25 km, for a total of 75 km.  During my ride I thought of some of the many fun moments he and I shared together, mostly on the various golf courses.  We both loved to kibits and tease one another.  We were quick to praise when one of us had a good shot and we would just laugh at the bad ones.  John is gone now but he will not be forgotten.

I would like to thank all of you for your very generous support.  God willing it is my intention to do the ride again next year and I have already recruited some of the younger folks to join our team. Thanks again and remember to stay active!!!

Update on my Ride

Hi everyone,

Just thought I would provide an update on our fundraiser for the BMO Ride for Cancer.

First, I will update you on my friend John Pickford, whom I am dedicating this ride to. John is battling pancreatic cancer. His spirits remains high, he is no longer having chemotherapy and the fight goes on.

When John told some of his friends about my dedicating my ride to him, their response both financially and with words of encouragement was over the top, especially since I have never met these people. In view of this I felt I should tell you a little about myself. I am 81 years old age. I bought my first bike when I was 60 years of age and proceeded to damn near kill myself trying to learn to ride. I grew up in Dead Man’s Cove, next to the Armdale Yacht Club on the Northwest Arm in Halifax. As a teenager I made spending money by giving swimming lessons, lifeguarding as well as teaching sailing. After high school, I joined the RCMP. I retired from the police force in 1990. For the next 5 years my brothers and I owned and operated J.F Goode and Sons office and stationary company in Halifax, following in our father’s footsteps who owned Halifax Stationers.

In 2008 I was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphatic Leukemia (CLL) The Doctor at the time told me that CLL was a bad/good cancer. Bad in that there was no cure for it, and good because it often went into remission and could remain there indefinitely, as mine has. I take no medication however, I have bloodwork done every 3 months and it is monitored closely. In recent conversations I have had with the cancer doctors I was informed that there are now several treatments for CLL.

Our team this year consists of my daughter, who is in her mid-fifties; along with my grandson who is in his mid-twenties. When we signed up for the BMO Cancer Ride they asked that each of us attempt to raise $1,000 each. As of this day we have raised $6,152 as a team and we are not finished yet. For those of you who have yet to get onboard it is time to get the cheque book out and make a donation.

My hope before I leave this earth is that there will be a cure for all cancers just like that has happened with AIDS. The key for this to happen would seem to be early detection.
