Last time, cancer picked a fight with me. On September 28th, it's my turn!
On July 27th, 2022, at the age of 23, I was diagnosed with lymphoma. After several extended hospitalizations I finally had an answer – not a great one, but an answer nonetheless. I was one year into school, moving in with my girlfriend (for the first time), and one week from starting a new job. After a slough of appointments and the first few weeks of school, I began radiation therapy. I progressed through treatment as my family and friends carried me through what I can easily say was the hardest thing I have ever gone through. As a 25 year heart transplant recipient with dozens of surgeries and complications under my belt, I do not use that statement lightly.
On the day of this ride it will be just under 2 years since I finished my cancer treatment, and I am told it is the only treatment I will be needing. Despite what you read above, I consider myself exceptionally lucky. My cancer was non-aggressive, responded well to the therapy, and I only needed radiation (not that I’d recommend it). Based on Canadian data from 2015 to 2017, the predicted 5-year net survival for all cancers combined was 64%. This means that about 36% of people are expected to die within 5 years of their cancer diagnosis. Over one third.
On September 28th I will be riding for those who cannot ride right now, and those who will never be able to. I am unbelievably fortunate to be able to participate in this ride and I truly believe that with the contributions raised by your donations we can soon improve those odds for Canadians. Ultimately, money can fight cancer and I am asking you to donate what you are comfortable with. My goal is $5,000 and I am giving it my all to train hard and make you all proud!
