Supporting the fight against cancer
Having lost my mother to colon cancer five years ago, little did I know that the same disease would pass on to me. Through genetic testing at the Maritime Medical Genetics Service at the IWK, the purpose of the appointment was to gain information that can help individuals like myself make informed personal decisions about my health and especially my children's health care. Discussing background information such as family history helps the genetic counselors assess potential hereditary risks and guide us through options for screening, prevention, and early detection. Knowledge truly is power when it comes to protecting our health and the future of our families.
